Differentiated Instruction

Wow! What a great experience today with Sharon Carter. After reflecting on my own learning, I realized that I am not the visual learner I thought I was before. This also made me think about how I teach my students. Some points that really stuck out to me were how educators assess at the end of a unit, and in reality....assessment should be how to understand your students to better educate them next. Also, how assessment should be how we can help our students grow. This experience was a great big wake-up call for me and how I can use data in my classroom to help my students to grow and not just label where they are in the system.

Tracy, I am wondering how we could modify this activity for younger students. Any suggestions?

I agree, I really appreciated activities that put us in the same seat as students (frustrated, wanting to give up or even pressing on). It really is a reality check for me and brings me back on the way I learn, so I'm building my Data Set from my personal experience that are very similar to the students.

I think differentiation applies in many ways. To build the Doubters and Believers activity today about regarding reac, gender, and sexuality, I do get frustrated in my school by the things I do not have the credibility to say. Like Regina said that a black teacher said to a student that he will have a harder time in life because he will need to "prove" himself more. I can say this to my students, and sometimes I try to, but I'm not sure it holds any meaning to my students coming from me.

I really enjoyed this presentation as well. I love participating in professional development in which I am actively involved. It only makes sense that we are taught to engage our students with meaningful lessons that professional development for teachers should be the same way.
