I found the journal exercise very interesting. I could relate so much to Shanon's comments to her student. For me talking to the empty chair is exactly the problem-- the students who "disappear"-- the ones who we don't reach and wish that we could have. I wrote about one such young man-- and there is real regret and a haunting sense of what might have been.
